Numbers Are Sexy: My Kickstarter Week 1 Update
I launched my Kickstarter campaign for Here Now, my next CD, on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 4:30 PM.
It’s been one week. Here are some oh-my-goodness-if-only-I-smoked numbers about how the campaign is doing. The overview:
Days: 7
Backers: 26
Average pledge: $90.23
And here’s my favorite part:
Total pledged: $2,346
% of goal: 78%
That’s SEVENTY EIGHT PERCENT IN ONE WEEK!
For those of you who have never experienced the joy of running a Kickstarter campaign, what you may not know is that it’s an all-or-nothing deal.
I have a goal. I put myself on the line to reach it. If I don’t reach my goal, guess what? NOTHING HAPPENS. The deafening sound of absolutely nothing.
The super-good news is that never in a million years did I think we’d get to over 3/4 of the way there in 1/4 of the time of the campaign. Talk about an awesome sense of momentum! This is definitely a bigger start than the average Kickstarter campaign – and they have graphs for that themselves. My very crude manual counting up of the percentages from this graph suggests that, on average, projects reach 40% of their funding in the first 25% of the timeframe of the project.
You have floored me.
Here are some other sexy numbers, direct from Kickstarter:
82% of projects with over 20% funding reach their goal. (Source: www.kickstarter.com/help/stats)
The top 10 most popular pledge levels are all $100 or less. 2.43% of pledges are just $1.00. (Source: www.kickstarter.com/blog/trends-in-pricing-and-duration)
So, what now? Well…there is still the rest of my goal to reach!
How awesome would it be…
…To blow this goal of the water by the end of this week? I bet we can do it. And you can help:
- PLEDGE NOW. Even $1 helps to reach my goal. But more gets you some cool stuff…not the least of which is all the new music I’m recording!!
- Share on Facebook. Tweet. Use this link: http://kck.st/VFr1tg
- Tell a friend. Consider who might think this is a fun, cool project. Send a direct email to just one person and tell them about me. No spamming! Just spread the love, one person at a time. And if it works, let me know so I can thank you profusely!
Let’s have some fun. Let’s make HERE NOW.
Thank you for listening!!

Hello music friends!
Announcements, Art and Funding
I just received my “ArtSake” email news from the Massachusetts Cultural Coalition. The first line of it reads, “To make art, sometimes you need to find a way to fund it.” True words!
And that’s why I’m letting you know that, very soon, I’ll be launching a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter where you can pre-order my next album, keep tabs on my recording progress, and pledge towards a variety of interesting, unique, or tasty (homemade Birch Beer, anyone?) rewards too.
My new album will be called HERE NOW. (And there was much rejoicing!) I can’t wait for you to be a part of it!
Stay tuned for news on the campaign launch! It’s coming really, really soon.

Providence TONIGHT, Roslindale TOMORROW…and what’s coming soon!?
Hello music friends!
So…I’m going to make a new record! Okay, so it isn’t likely going to be released as a vinyl record. Not at first, anyway (you never know what could happen in the future). But still…I’m saying it out loud. I’m putting it in writing. And that makes it real. And I am *wicked* excited about it. If it’s been a while since you’ve been to a show, a lot of my new music is growing in an interesting new direction, so lots of songs on the next record will – gulp! gasp! – have a band behind me. I am so, so pumped for this! And wanted to share with you. Of course.
It always strikes me as funny how hard it is to express the sentiment of jumping-up-and-down-ridiculously-excited in an email message. Do any of you know if there’s an emoticon for this?
Anyway, here’s a fun little home demo of one of my “this will be on the new record” songs from a rehearsal with my good friend and BBR partner Dan Cloutier on the electric guitar. Enjoy, and feel free to help me share it around! (Can you tell I’m excited!?) (I am SO excited!!!)

Art => Awake + Alive
Wake up! WAAAAAAKE UUUUUP!!!
Sorry to yell. I may be preaching to the choir here…but we all need to wake up. Myself included. I write about this a lot in my music, but I still forget a lot. As I wrote in this story behind the song, “Sleepwalking” was a kick in the pants to myself. “Sleepwalking” is the reason I’m going to WDS. “Sleepwalking” was the catalyst for moving ahead with my re-prioritized life. So I wonder, if I had not become a songwriter, where would I be now? Still sleepwalking through life? (Click here to hear a rough demo of this song.)
See, art is how we wake up. And by art, I mean making life a work of art, through making art, being in art, and seeing art around us. No more just living and trying to make it through the next 5 minutes.
It doesn’t happen overnight. And it will never happen if you don’t START. With baby steps. I mean, you can go cold turkey if you want, but I have no idea how to be successful with that. If you figure it out, let me know!
Where to – and how to start? Ask yourself where art fits into your own life. And pay attention to art – it’s not just “noise.” Whether it’s the music you listen to in the car, the architecture you see as you drive through the city, or the vibrant or even muted colors you see in nature walking down the street, it’s all worth noticing more, all worth paying attention to more.
Write it down. Write it down with an actual pen or pencil and a piece of paper. Typing it isn’t the same – it doesn’t trigger the tactile feeling and physical memory of handwriting. Do it with a crayon and a napkin if you have to. It doesn’t have to be pretty. Carry it with you. Remind yourself. Take 10 seconds to jot it down when you can.
Have you ever looked at a broken down building and wonder where there is art in it? Walked down a dusty street in a too-busy city? Who are all these people, and where are they going? What are they thinking? Do they notice or realize how they are part of a greater whole? Art is the story behind what you see. And when you start to see it, to REALLY see it, you can start to BE it too.
Start creating. It’s hard, and scary, especially at first. The hardest thing to do after you make art once is to KEEP MAKING IT. It doesn’t matter what form – it’s whatever speaks to you once you start listening.
And then – share it. Find a community of artists who will understand what it’s like to make art, to take the risk of sharing it, and yet – do it anyway. Not for “success”, although that may come. Share art so that you can be present to the art of others. Engage in the process with them. It’s a wonderful, lifting feedback loop.
Sometimes art and inspiration won’t come when you want it to. That’s okay – but that doesn’t mean you are not part of that artist community. This is why it’s ever so much more important to be just as present for others’ art as you are in creating your own. Don’t stop listening. Inspiration will come at the right time.
Soon, once you are creating art regularly – without judgment, without worrying about whether or not someone likes it or criticizes it, you will be in the next phase: Becoming. You are BECOMING art. An artist. An artist of paint, an artist of sculpture, and artist of music, and artist of writing…An Artist of LIFE. Imagine embracing your whole creative self, and your place in a world full of art and beauty in the unexpected, the mundane, the every day life.
Your world will become a better place for it. You will see color where you haven’t seen it before. You will hear music where before you heard silence, or worse, the overwhelm of white noise.
Just imagine if we could influence others to take the same approach, to be Artists of Life. How awake and alive we could be.
Maybe I sound naive. But what’s the alternative? Waking up one day (assuming you actually wake up some day) and realizing you have missed everything around you?
I’ll take art, please. Who’s with me?

The Story Behind The Song: Sleepwalking
About a year and a half ago, just after New Year’s Day, something dawned on me.
1. I was complaining about being stuck, without doing much about it. I had felt this way for many, many months. Working full time (or more), trying to perform 2-3 nights a week, trying to have time at home with my family… I was blessed to have so much in my life, but I was also burning the candle at both ends AND down the middle. Something had to give, but I had no idea what, and had no time left in my day to figure it out.
2. This was completely normal – feeling stuck but thinking you’re too busy to do anything about it. Or, when you do have “downtime,” crashing because you’ve been running around like a chicken with your head cut off for so long. Who can make themselves get motivated to do anything productive in that state? A lot of people feel like that, I think.
One day, I was stuck in traffic during another long commute on the Mass Pike. Sitting there, I looked around and wondered about all the other solo commuters, sitting in their cars. What were they doing? Were they frustrated? Did the see the parallel between being stuck in traffic and being stuck in life? And it came to me: I look around, and all I see are people sleepwalking.
It was a kick in the pants to myself: Stop doing what you’re doing just because it’s what you’ve always done. Change doesn’t happen that way. Getting unstuck doesn’t happen that way. Freedom doesn’t happen that way.
When I *finally* got home, I wrote this song. Want to listen? Here’s a demo on my Soundcloud page.
Sleepwalking (title subject to change!)
Wake up to the truth that hides inside you
Make up your mind
Wake up to the fire burning just below the surface
Make up for lost time
I look around and all I see are
People sleepwalking
I look around, don’t want to be one of those
People sleepwalking
Take the time to notice something right here right now
Break the pattern of complacency
Take the time to be in this moment — your passion will come out
Break away and be free
I look around and all I see are
People sleepwalking
I look around, don’t want to be one of those
People sleepwalking
I don’t want to live my life on cruise control
Autopilot’s not the way to take on the world
In my way, my way, my way
My way, my way, my way
I look around and all I see are
People sleepwalking
I look around, don’t want to be one of those
People sleepwalking

If you’re anything like me, it helps to read this when I need a mental kick in the pants. I play this song out all the time – it keeps me grounded in how far I’ve come since writing it, and focused on all the things that are still to come.

In big, big, life news – I’d mentioned some change was on the way a couple of emails ago. Well, the change is here – I’ve rearranged my work schedule (thanks to my awesomely supportive boss at work), cut my hours back at work, and have more time at home with family…and more time for music! I’ve wanted to do this for quite a while, and after thinking and thinking and thinking, then planning, planning, and planning some more, it finally came to be as of the 1st of the year. I am so blessed to have this opportunity and am already making the best of it – I’ve written a bunch of new songs already, and I know that there are more on the way. I’m also starting to think about recording again, and just putting the words in writing makes it that much more real. I’m kicking it up a notch, as they say – and I’m so, so excited to have more time to really do it!
I’ve been writing about this journey in my blogs for Mamapalooza. If you want to get a sense of where my head is at, click to read more!

2011 was a great year! I did my first “out of the region” music trip to Austin, Texas, I got to sing and play on more recordings (Dan Cloutier, Ashley Jordan, and Lori Diamond & Fred Abatelli), Birch Beer Records added 2 new artists (Tom Smith & Oen Kennedy), BBR’s Levi Schmidt’s debut “Like Water” turned 1 year old, and I met so many new wonderful people.
In 2012, there will be more music on the way. You can be sure of that. And, I know for certain I haven’t thanked you enough. I am pinching myself daily that life is this good.
